Inside MailerLite's award-winning culture 🏆 Here's what drives us

9 min read · Jan 15, 2025

We’re thrilled to announce that MailerLite recently received 3 best company awards from Comparably: Best Company Compensation, Best CEO, and—the one we in the People Experience team are most proud of—Best Company Culture.

At MailerLite we focus on creating a culture deeply rooted in the core values that influence our decisions and shape our daily processes. This has helped us build a culture that is unique, successful, and now, award-winning. 🏆

Here’s a look at 8 key factors that make our culture special.

About the Comparably awards

Comparably is a leading platform for gathering insights on company culture, employee satisfaction, and employer branding. The Comparably Awards are especially meaningful to us as they come directly from anonymous employee feedback collected over 12 months.

1. We’re remote-first pioneers

Remote work and async communication are parts of the MailerLite DNA. We’ve embraced this approach for over 10 years!

Our team members can work from wherever they feel most productive. This fosters trust and accountability and is one of many ways we increase team wellness.

Being remote-first also enables us to hire globally. We have an exceptionally diverse team with members from over 45 countries. Diversity is now one of our biggest strengths: It helps us understand our global audience and fosters an inclusive culture where open communication drives daily work.

We also believe that having people with different personalities and cultural backgrounds on our team improves performance. Hearing various opinions can lead to unexpected results and fewer blind spots.

2. We stay connected

Since we’re remote-first, most company interactions happen online. We come together through virtual events and company-wide Slack discussion channels.

Our biggest online event is the company all-hands. This keeps everyone up-to-date with the latest news, helps align us on our business goals and lets us celebrate our wins.

We also run regular Culture Map events, where team members from the same country host a session about their unique customs and traditions. Understanding where each team member comes from is crucial to improving communication and fostering a more open and friendly work environment.

Apart from these events, the majority of our communication happens on Slack. Two of the most active channels are:

  1. #mailerlite-stories, where we share personal and professional stories to connect, develop storytelling skills, and learn about our hobbies and interests.

  2. #question-a-day, where we ask one question a day to get to know each other better. It’s a fun and relaxed way to build closer relationships.

Beyond these channels, we have discussions for everything! From dad jokes to the weather.

3. We hold epic workations

Our annual workation is the MailerLite event of the year. It brings team members together in inspiring locations, encouraging bonding, creativity, and alignment with the company's goals.

These events involve plenty of fun and socializing, but they’re also a productive time where we brainstorm the future of our products. This can be tough, but we embrace the challenge as we believe that real team bonding happens when we’re uncomfortable together.

In previous years, we’ve hosted workations in some of the most exotic places on earth like Bali, Barcelona and Istanbul. Each of these events brought us closer together and helped us work on new ideas.

4. We prioritize our customers

One of our core values is that we put people first. We show our human side in everything we do and we treat our customers as people, not faceless users.

All our decisions are based on what's best for the customer and the business. It's about building a stronger team so we can serve our customers better. The focus on creating a high-quality, user-friendly product aligns people with a clear mission, instilling pride in their work and its impact.

This is why we have impressive ratings on review platforms like G2 and TrustRadius, as well as 97% customer support satisfaction rates and a 5-minute average response time in chat.

5. We take care of our people

Putting people first means prioritizing both our customers and our team. We believe a healthy team is a happy, productive team. That’s why we offer international health insurance, ensuring everyone can access high-quality healthcare no matter where they are in the world.

This insurance includes coverage for psychological sessions, because mental health is just as important as physical health. This benefit encourages everyone to prioritize their well-being and take care of themselves.

We believe that remote work and asynchronous communication have their own mental health benefits. Everyone can structure their day in a way that works for them, helping us stay focused and productive.

We also encourage everyone to take at least two weeks of uninterrupted vacation each year to rest and recharge.

6. We improve through feedback

At MailerLite, we value every voice. Feedback is a cornerstone of how we improve our processes, products, and culture.

Whether through surveys, 1:1 check-ins, or open Slack discussions, team members are encouraged to share their ideas, concerns, and feedback. This transparent communication has a role in shaping the company’s direction.

We also encourage positive feedback so the contributions of every team member are recognized and appreciated.

Our #kudos Slack channel and shoutouts during all-hands meetings ensure everyone’s efforts are acknowledged. This creates a positive work environment where team members feel valued and motivated.

We believe in celebrating our achievements, no matter how big or small. Whether it’s a product milestone, a successful campaign, or a personal accomplishment, we share and celebrate together.

7. We support parents at home and in their careers

Our #parents Slack channel has 50 members. This means almost a third of our team are parents! We believe in giving the parents on our team the support they need to thrive at home and in their careers.

Here are some of the main ways we support parents.

  • Flexible work schedule: Being in control of your schedule means parents can build their days around what works for them and their families

  • Parental days: Time spent with children is precious. We give parents one extra day off per month to spend time with their kids

  • Parents community: We share personal stories and ask for advice from fellow parents on how to handle parental responsibilities and work duties. It’s invaluable to have such a support group at a workplace

  • Parental leave: We believe that the period after a baby is born is precious. Because of that, we give 3 months of paid leave to new mothers and 1 month to dads

  • Parental budget: We provide all team members with a $1,000 parent’s budget when a baby is born

We believe these benefits support the parents in our team throughout their entire journey. Read more about being a parent at MailerLite here.

8. We encourage creativity and ownership

Inspired by our value “We simplify,” all team members are encouraged to take ownership of their work, make decisions, and pursue personal growth through learning opportunities.

Taking ownership means we take responsibility for our ideas and turn them into meaningful results. One tool we’ve created to assess ideas is our LITE scoring calculation. This simple calculation helps us define an idea’s long-term value, customer impact and required resources to measure its value and determine how closely it aligns with our goals.

Anyone with an idea can use this method to measure their idea before sharing it with the team.

Creativity and ownership is also encouraged by our Joy Budget and Creative Days benefits. These give each team member special perks for personal and professional growth. There are no requirements around how people use these resources, everyone is trusted to decide what gives them the most value.

The only requirement is that people share how they spent their time in our #mailerlite-stories Slack channel. This is an opportunity for us all to connect while sharing stories, developing communication skills, and increasing team engagement.

It’s also essential inspiration for everyone who’s unsure how they will spend their next Creative Day or Joy Budget.

Building an award-winning culture

Beyond these 8 factors, we believe our culture stands out not just because of what it offers its team members but because of how the work itself shapes the culture every day.

Beyond perks and fun, the team is united by a shared purpose: enabling businesses and creators worldwide to connect with their audiences effectively. This purpose drives motivation, creativity, and a sense of belonging.
